Best Places to Take Family Pictures in Indianapolis

The right location and setting can make a significant difference in family pictures. The good thing is that Indianapolis is home to several beautiful shooting locations, including parks, gardens, and urban architecture. Here’s a list of the best places to take family pictures in Indianapolis for your dream photoshoot.

Best Places to Take Family Pictures in Indianapolis

Among the best places to shoot family photos in Indianapolis include Eagle Creek Park, Blue Heron Park, and Holcomb Gardens. Newfields and Downtown Indianapolis are suitable for families who want to combine nature and art. Meanwhile, Southeastway and Holliday Parks let you incorporate family-bonding activities into your images.

As a professional photographer for over 15 years, I’ve scouted the top places in Indianapolis to shoot family portraits. Here are some of the recommended sites that would make the perfect setting for your next family photo session.

Eagle Creek Park

Eagle Creek Park is one of America’s top largest municipal parks. Beautiful every season, you can use the park’s water fields and hills as a charming backdrop for your family pictures.

It can get busy during summer weekends, so I recommend doing the photoshoot during autumn when the foliage changes color. The park is open daily. While it requires a photography fee for professional shoots, the shots will be worth every penny.

  • Ornithology Center: If you like to add more genuine movements instead of posing, you can stroll around the excellent exhibits at the park’s Ornithology Center.
  • Rick’s Boatyard Cafe: Is this your baby’s first dine-out experience? Let’s photograph your little one’s moment with a range of good meals from Rick’s Boatyard Cafe. Another option is to bring your own picnic and lounge at any of the park’s 24 picnic sites.

Blue Heron Park and Wetlands

The Blue Heron Park and Wetlands is among my go-to spots for family photoshoots in Indianapolis. This park includes a playground, picnic tables, and rentable shelters for families to bond.

One of the best spots to pose for family pictures is the footbridge that connects the Blue Heron Park to the Wetland. There’s even a boardwalk over the water. Aside from a 12-acre land of native Indiana wildflowers, the park includes a 1.5-mile connection to the Historic Greenway Trail.

Holcomb Gardens

The Holcomb Gardens is among the best places to take family pictures in Indianapolis if you want a combination of nature and downtown vibes. I recommend booking a photoshoot during spring and early summer to have the blooming peonies and roses as your background.

If you’re an alumnus of Butler University, we can make this a theme for your family photos, you can even do a few shots for your teenage kids. Located on Butler University’s campus, the Holcomb Gardens features a lake, garden house, gazebo, and waterfalls that make great spots for outdoor photography.

Holliday Park

Family photography has a positive effect on a child’s self-esteem, as this is an opportunity for kids to feel worthy of love, art, and professional documentation. A family photo session creates a fun, safe, and loving environment for families to bond.

Despite being one of the older parks in Indianapolis, the Holliday Park can balance having a serene ambiance for photoshoots and an exciting place for families to bond.

You can walk and pose near the creeks of the White River and the Holliday Park Ruins. Lots of landscaping, wooden areas, and water features make entrancing backdrops for family pictures. Spend time in the park’s nature center for interactive activities for kids.

Newfields

The Newfields is another ideal family photography location in Indianapolis, especially in the spring when millions of flowers bloom.

The only catch is that you must secure a photography permit at least three weeks before the shoot. It’s important that you coordinate this with your family photographer to plan the timeline. Once you have a permit, you can enjoy these spots in Newfields.

  • Indianapolis Museum of Art: The museum offers a comprehensive collection of paintings and video-based works. This is a good starting point for your tour of Newfields.
  • The Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park: This 35-acre lake has the largest native pollinator meadow in Indianapolis. This area is perfect for families who want to include nature and art in the images.
  • The Garden: The flowers, birds, and fresh air make The Garden an enchanting place for outdoor family shoots.

Southeastway Park

If your family lives south of downtown, you don’t have to travel far to find a picture-worthy spot. At Southeastway Park, you can walk along the large forest area, wetland spaces, and meadows to take pictures.

The wood acres, nature paths, and green spaces create a dreamy effect on family photos, especially during sunset. Moreover, you can easily find a spot to picnic, play a soccer game, or fly a kite.

Downtown Indianapolis

If you prefer a more urban feel to the photos, you can take your family pictures in Downtown Indianapolis. It’s a thriving area filled with art displays, festivals, and shops.

  • The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis: The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis is the largest museum of its kind in the world, boasting nearly 500,000 square feet of facility for activities and displays. It also has an outdoor sports park where you can incorporate your love of sports into the photos.
  • White River State Park: As the country’s only cultural urban state park, this park offers a blend of green space and cultural attractions for picture-taking.
  • Canal Walk: The refurbished Canal Walk serves as a waterside promenade for families, bikers, and sightseers. You can also rent pedal boats for recreation.
  • Mass Ave Arts District: If your family loves the arts, the Mass Ave Arts District is the perfect place to shoot family photos in Indianapolis. You can bring out your best outfits while walking along the five-block area of art galleries, eclectic boutiques, and restaurants.

Conclusion

Whether your family loves nature or cityscape, Indianapolis has several picturesque locations. These places also make great shooting locations for outdoor baby photography. Now that you have a list of the best spots in Indianapolis to take family photos, you can now plan for the theme and wardrobe.
